Selecting Medical-Grade Polymers to Cut Carbon and Reduce Healthcare Waste

SolutionsAdvanced Materials

Practical medical-grade polymer selection strategies to prioritise patient safety and develop sustainable medical devices.

In our recent industry survey, 29% of medical and healthcare producers said developing more sustainable products was their top priority. Achieving this without compromising patient safety, compliance or performance often comes down to one early design decision: material selection. Finding the right medical-grade polymers is therefore key to cutting carbon emissions and reducing healthcare waste.

Cutting Carbon with Drop-in Polymers

Reducing CO₂ emissions is high on the agenda for many medical device producers: more than a quarter named reducing their carbon footprint as their top sustainability priority. The raw materials used in a device contribute to its overall footprint, which makes polymer selection the place to start.

Switching to drop-in medical-grade polymers is one of the most practical ways to act on this. Products such as PP, PE, ABS, TPU, and TPE-S can be made from renewable feedstocks, such as used cooking oil and other bio-circular waste streams, using an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach. Because these materials are chemically identical to conventional counterparts, the properties and performance stay the same.

Reducing Healthcare Waste with Sterilisable, Recyclable, Bioresorbable Polymer Alternatives

Healthcare generates significant waste throughout the care pathway, and hospitals alone produce more than one tonne per bed each year. Around 10–25% of this waste is hazardous and needs specialised treatment, but the non-hazardous rest offers the biggest opportunity to use resources more efficiently. Today, however, more than 90% of healthcare waste is incinerated. Reducing this impact starts at the design stage, where four types of medical-grade polymers are worth considering.

Repeatably Sterilisable Polymers

High-performance polymers, such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyamide 12 (PA12), can be repeatedly sterilised while retaining their strength, chemical resistance and dimensional stability. This makes them well suited to reusable devices, such as surgical instruments and endoscopy components, which can stay in service through many use cycles and reduce single-use waste.

Recyclable Polymers

Replacing complex multi-material structures with mono-material and mono-layer constructions makes devices easier to recycle. Polymers such as PP, PE, cyclic olefin copolymer (COC), and copolyesters can do this without compromising barrier or performance properties.

PVC Polymer Alternatives

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely used in intravenous (IV) bags, tubing and oxygen masks, and accounts for an estimated 5–10% of hospital waste by weight. Alternatives such as TPE, TPU, PP, and PE can deliver comparable flexibility without phthalate plasticisers. In selected applications, they can also simplify material separation and recycling.

Bioresorbable Polymers

Bioresorbable medical-grade polymers are gradually absorbed by the body, which removes the need for a second surgery to take out an implant. This saves materials and hospital resources that a removal procedure would use and lowers the risk to patients.
