SOLUTION RATIONALE
Athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis) is one of the most widespread fungal infections globally, affecting millions. For its treatment, film-forming solutions (FFS) offer a clever advantage: they’re easy to apply, dry quickly, and create a protective layer with excellent adhesive properties.
Instead of relying on traditional creams or ointments, the FFS dries into a transparent, non-tacky film that stays put - even through showers - delivering sustained antifungal action right where it’s needed.
In this approach, Terbinafine hydrochloride (TH) stands out as a highly effective antifungal agent, valued for its potency and excellent patient tolerance. IMCD successfully developed an FFS by combining TH with high–high-molecular-weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) and ethylcellulose (EC) as the polymer base. The result is:
- Rapid, water‑resistant film: combination of film formers results in a transparent, non-tacky coating that resists washing off.
- Sustained skin contact: This film keeps the drug in close contact with the affected skin, potentially improving antifungal effectiveness.
- Pleasant texture for patients: The finish is smooth and residue-free - far beyond what users typically expect from topical treatments.
